The Question of the Week
August 19th, 2007

After hearing, reading and reflecting on this Sunday’s readings…

Name a time when you helped someone by not taking the “easy road”.

Discuss it over a family dinner!
Talk on your way to the mall!
Make it a weekly household tradition!

It‘s been quite a hectic week around the parishes, and I am so grateful to the staffs that have been keeping things going so well.  Most of you know I have been limping around for a while, and the surgery to repair my knee will take place this coming Tuesday.  This is a repeat from the same operation on the other knee a few years ago.  I have to stop being so active!  So keep my in your prayers.  I will be recouping for a week or so, but look forward to returning to full work after Labor Day.

You may have already read the Lowell Sun article this weekend on the joint-parish adventure that we are in.  I am very optimistic about our being able to keep an even balance between the two parishes.  One of the important points I hope is in the bulletin was noting how important lay participation and support is for the success of both parishes.  You ARE the parish and we need to keep increasing involvement.  One of the important areas of support is at liturgy.  There seems to be a reluctance to volunteer to be a liturgical minister.  This is not good.  Please consider volunteering to be a Eucharistic Minister or a Lector or help in some way.  We cannot have vibrant and effective liturgy without your participation.  The call for the “full participation of the laity” in the liturgy has been an integral call of the Church for over 40 years now.  We need your help at almost all the Masses.  Without full participation, we have to seriously evaluate each liturgy and its value to the parish.  To serve at the altar is a grace and a gift – to US and to YOU.  I ask you to come forward and be of service to the community to which you belong.

Summer is coming to a close and we are getting ready for a full new year.  Programs are being structured and calendars are set.  We have completed our registration periods for Religious Education and look forward to an excellent year with the students that have signed up.  Ste. Marguerite will begin a new program and the staff is very excited about its success.  St. Francis will continue to build on its programs and enhance the Generations of Faith process.  I wish you and your families a great “end of summer” and look forward to being with you – walking tall – as soon as possible.  God bless you all.

Peace,
Fr. Bob

 Saint Vincent de Paul

In today’s Gospel, Jesus tell us that his message can be divisive because it calls us to a radical way of living, a clash of values and priorities which demands self-giving for the good of others. With love for your neighbors who have nothing, consider a donation to the St. Vincent de Paul Society. Thank you!

Annual Catholic Appeal 2007

Our Faith At Work

Cardinal Sean invites all Catholic families to consider pledging to this year’s Catholic Appeal.  To date, St. Francis has only raised HALF of this year’s targeted amount of $39,500.  Please consider making a pledge.  As Catholics, it is our responsibility to help the greater Church.  Every pledge counts.  Donation information can be found in the Church lobby or at www.bostoncatholicappeal.org

Please Note…

The sacrament of Baptism will no longer be celebrated on the 2nd Sunday of the month.  Baptisms will now be held on the 4th Sunday of each month.  As always, please call the office at least one month in advance to book a baptism.  Thank you!

Support our Parish Show....

And help those in need as well.  On the weekends of August 25/26 and Sept. 1 and 2, show representatives from "Gone with the Breeze.com" will be in the lobby taking patron names for the program book.  For a $5 donation, your name will be printed in the book.  You can also write a message to the cast and crew at $5 per line.  Proceeds from the show and program book will benefit the Dracut Food Pantry and Cor Unum Meal Center at St. Patrick Church in Lawrence.  Forms will also be available to advertise your business at $30 (1/4 page), $55 (half page) and $100 (full page).  Everyone in the show is working hard -- your support would be appreciated!

VIRTUS Training For All New Volunteers

There will be two classes offered at St. Francis for the VIRTUS Training Program.  They will be held on Saturday, August 18th at 10am and Saturday, September 15 at 10am.  You need only attend one of those sessions.  This three-hour program educates adults in ways to prevent child abuse and how to provide safe environments for children.  All staff and all volunteers are mandated to attend a training session.  Please call the Parish Office to register.  If you have attended a previous session, you do not have to attend again.
